To Clown or Not to Clown?
What's better - a witty, tongue in cheek profile, or something more genuine/serious?
Do women prefer funny or earnest 🙂

I think the responses to this question show just how difficult it is to get this right. My advice is just to be yourself, after all that's who you are. There's little point in trying to be someone you're not, that only leads to disappointment.

Definitely witty. It demonstrates humour, intelligence and personality which tells me much more than a "serious" profile.
But wit is different from crap jokes or "cheeky" profiles. "Cheeky chappie seeks bubbly lady" - shudder!

I wholeheartedly agree, they tell you so little and show nothing of the person behind them.

I like a witty profile. A man with a sense of humour is far sexier for me. Life is too serious anyway so someone who can make you smile is way ahead of any serious paragraphs.

Well let's start by saying a real profile helps instead of the stupid computer-generated ones.
Think I'm going to start a Revolution....

Positive and genuine profiles are the best.

And to add to Devon Pixie's comments, the internet is not the best medium to be humorous to strangers. Jokes can be misinterpreted quite easily. I think a profile should be functional, with enough information to allow someone to assess what a person is looking for, and some basic information about them. Leave the rest to the chats and actual meets.

Humour is of course subjective, so your humour is unlikely to appeal to everyone, maybe then a funny profile is slightly riskier. Personally I love a witty profile as long as it's interspersed with some genuine content and is actually funny, if it's the same old jokes everyone else makes that's an instant turn off.

I prefer serious with a hint of humour, to be able to get an understanding of the person but also feel that warmth of humour would be ideal.

I think humour is high on most peoples' list though there are some pretty arch/condescending types with a PLU attitude that is far from attractive.
At the same time a constant war of banter can get tiresome and, personally, I like someone who can be reflective and revealing of who is underneath that facade.
