Drinking Etiquette
Thoughts on drinking protocol on a first date? Anyone else have a pre-drink for dutch courage?

I’ve been on first dates where my IE has had a couple of glasses of wine while I had a soft drink. As I rarely drink, I don’t have a view on what anyone else should drink. On one occasion my IE explained she was looking forward to the date so much she suggested a glass of Champaign would be nice. On that occasion I joined her as it seemed like a great start to a date. What all this says to me is that each date (like people) is different and you should do what makes you comfortable and happy. After all that is why we are all on here.

I don't drink for Dutch courage but if my date is in a bar we'll both have a couple of drinks. It's part of the night out. So lunchtime no drinking, evening drinking.
One of my best dates was with my previous IE about 3 months into our relationship. We went out for dinner, then to a pub to watch a live band. I got tipsy on wine, he didn't drink loads (needed to look after me!!) We danced, snogged in the corner and had a brilliant night

I think it's fine to have a little drink for some courage! To be honest most dates I've had have been over a drink anyway

It’s a big warning sign for me, I live with somebody who has a drinking problem so I know what to look for.
I don’t think it’s harmful to have a glass of wine or two but 2/3 bottles is not acceptable.

Its not a good idea to turn up for a first date smelling of alcohol. If my date did that I would leave immediately. Its a sign of worse to come.
By all means have a drink or two together to help you both relax and lower your inhibitions.

Just wondering if folk read profiles and consider that they mean what they say?
I think smoking is a deal breaker, and that decision is easily reached. Drinking somehow slips through the scrutiny, its tolerated.
Drunkards and teetotallers are irksome to each other. So really it's not a good start to try and join the two on a date.
Believe the profile is true.

I see nothing wrong with a little Dutch courage (helps me a lot!) just not too much that you’re all over the place!
